CHAPTER TEN

I turned around, careful to make sure that the barrel of my rifle never came in line with Tati. I scanned the forest, but found no eyes watching me. I didn’t think it was a good thing. It probably just meant that the thing I’d stared down was now taking care not to be seen.

“We mean no harm in treading on your territory.” I said, trying to mimic the language of the fae I’d met in the Lady Chal’s camp. “We are merely two travelers who have lost our way.”

“Only fools come to these lands with, or without, invitation.” Said the whisper. “And only fools would mistake a sprite such as myself as the one who rules here.”

“You may be right on both counts.” I said, still holding my rifle high and ready to fight. “But that doesn't change the fact that we need to continue on our way. Will you let us pass?

“Oh, you may pass.” Said the whisper. “You never had anything to fear from me. I’m only here to watch and be entertained.”

“Totally not ominous.” replied Tati.

“We are both known to the blood mage.” I replied to the sprite while ignoring Tati. “The one beside me has his protection, and I myself have been able to call him friend.”

“What friends indeed, to have sent brigands against him and his host, by your own admission!” cackled the unseen creature.

“No one sent anyone after the blood mage.” I replied. “And I know from experience that there’s no way my companion, who owes her life to his protection, would do so without his blessing.”

“Umm, about that.” replied Tati.

“You’ve got to be shitting me.” I said.

“Friends indeed!” cackled the wood sprite again. “I am far from the only voice and ears in this wood. Soon all will know of your treachery. And I shall be there as witness.”

The sprite’s words devolved into an eager, unrestrained laughter that did very little to help my calm. This was a Problem. Capital P. Capital fucking everything.

The blood mage, Alfblodseidr, didn’t get his name through idle actions. He was known throughout Faerie for his calm. Most of the time. Our current problem was the rest of the time, where he’d become renowned for such sudden and brutal displays of violence that gave even the other lords of Faerie pause.

Every single one of those outbursts had been in response to the same thing. Betrayals, or at least events that Alfblodseidr believed as such.

And now here we were, on the edge of the Alfblodseidr’s woods apparently. The woods he’d most likely retreated to in the minutes after he’d been shot while staying as a guest of the Lady Chal. The woods filled with his minions, who’d no doubt inform him of what they’d heard in painstaking detail.

Passing deeper into the blood mage’s lands was no longer an option. Not if we wanted our internal organs to remain internal.

“We’re not far from the border.” I replied to the sprite in Faerie. Goosebumps rippled across the back of my neck.
